Case study – Towards Circular Food Systems in East Africa

Elke Nijman, the founder of Circular Africa, has conducted academic- and field research about circular food systems in East Africa. This study is the first academic study that focuses on the barriers, drivers and solutions to implement a circular economy in the agricultural sector in East Africa in order to meet the challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Food security), 12 (Sustainable Consumption) and 13 (Climate action). There is limited academic research completed involving the circular economy, especially towards the implementation of a circular economy in the agricultural sector in this region.

In the next coming articles, Circular Africa will discuss circular food systems in-depth, including the needs to establish circular food systems in (East) Africa. For more insights, please contact elke@circularafrica.com
